Online classes are hard. For students, it is easy to turn off their cameras, mute themselves, and tune out their teachers. For teachers, it is difficult to motivate students to participate. The question-asking feature, which lives in the Zoom chat, is designed to promote participation and interactivity from students.
With the distinguishing of questions from regular chat messages, ease of answering questions, and social incentives such as progress bars and face piles, students are encouraged to respond to questions that teachers are asking.
